Busy Bodies Brooklyn

Sometimes, businesses are born of unexpected circumstance. Such is the truth of Busy Bodies Brooklyn, founded by owner Andrea Dillon and her husband Ben after the birth of their daughter, Maxine. Wanting to enrich their child's day with activity and play, the couple found themselves seeking out "mommy and me" classes all over Manhattan and Brooklyn, only to find them mostly overbooked and overpriced. Andrea was determined to create a space in her community to serve local families. Located in the heart of Clinton Hill, Busy Bodies is a comfortable, colorful and convenient neighborhood space for families to come together for open play, classes, events, lectures and parties.

FAB: How long have you called Brooklyn home?

Andrea Dillon: I moved to Brooklyn on August 13, the day of the 2003 blackout! Even with no electricity for the first few days, it was no doubt one of the best decisions I have ever made.

FAB: What inspired you to open your business?

Andrea: It wasn't until the birth of my daughter in late 2014 that I came up with the concept of Busy Bodies. So many of us have small apartments with very little light or outdoor space. It was isolating. With my extensive experience in running small businesses, I was confident that I could create a space that would benefit others like us in the community.

FAB: Why did you choose Clinton Hill?

Andrea: I've lived in the Clinton Hill / Fort Greene vicinity since I moved here in 2003, and I doubt I'll ever leave. In my opinion, it's one of the best neighborhoods in the world, [just] underserved as far as places to go that are dedicated to children and their caregivers. For me, there really was no other choice.

FAB: What knowledge or advice would you share with another small business owner, specifically another female entrepreneur?

Andrea: Trust your instincts when it comes to making the final creative decisions for your business.

FAB: What do you want people to know about your business?

Andrea: We believe that a sense of community is so important for both child and caregiver. Our space is soaked in natural light, with a jungle gym and 500 square feet of padded play space. An additional 500 square feet area includes tables full of art supplies, toys and music to enrich your child's day. (And we have a backyard, too!) Our wonderful teachers' wealth of experience complements our curriculum and enhances your child's overall health and wellness. We've created a place to play, nurture and grow together.
