Celebrate fall, and the re-opening of Fort Greene's Fowler Square, on Saturday, September 22, from 12 - 4pm! The beautifully designed public plaza space, popular with lunch crowds, local neighbors, students, and others was completed prior to summer's start and has become the ideal place to meet, hang, and people watch on busy Fulton Street. The completion of Fowler Square also helped mark NYC DOT's 10th anniversary of the plaza program, a key part of the City's effort to ensure that all New Yorkers live within a 10-minute walk of quality open space. Join us as we welcome fall with a FREE series of tours and cultural programming dedicated to the history and progress of the plaza, and its namesake, General Fowler.
Enjoy live musical performances by the Lafayette Inspirational Ensemble and Jeff Newell's New Trad Sextet, along with an operatic performance commissioned by American Opera Projects (AOP) and The Walt Whitman Project. Outstanding contralto Nicole Mitchell will sing "1861," by composer Nkeiru Okoye, following a presentation by historian Matt Dellinger, who is an expert on all things General Edward Brush Fowler, for whom the plaza area is named. (See detailed schedule here)
Two General Fowler Fort Greene walking tours, sponsored by FAB Fulton and AOP, will bookend the performances, with the first commencing at Fort Greene Park and concluding at Fowler Square, and the later tour departing from the plaza back to the park. The tours are free, but attendees must RSVP in advance. (Click here for the 1 pm tour; click here for the 4 pm tour.)
Be sure to check out the Community Heroes table, a mini photography exhibition representing a much larger project now on display at nearby Commodore Barry Park and Fort Greene Park. Local neighbors and long-time residents were nominated by their friends and families to share their unique and inspirational stories of how they've made Fort Greene a better place. (And, you can nominate future Community Heroes, too!)
It will be a great time for the whole community; tell your neighbors and bring the family!
The opera program presented by American Opera Projects (AOP) and The Walt Whitman Project is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts and New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council and NY State Assembly Member Walter T. Mosley, Dist. 57. The walking tours are co-sponsored by AOP and FAB Fulton and will be led by experienced guide Ron Janoff.
FABulous Fowler! A Celebration of Fowler Square is presented by FAB Fulton, with generous support from Council Member Laurie A. Cumbo and NYC Small Business Services.
